Impressive atmosphere; sub par food

by NigelTuffnel at Citysearch

Having just relocated to Bend, we selected Greg's Grill as our first night out to celebrate our arrival. At first glance you would think this place has to be the best in town; the giant entry doors and foyer are exquisite, with a warm and friendly staff to match.

On a Friday night at 7:00ish, suprisingly a table for two on the view window was available. Nice! A gorgeous sunset was burning beneath the mountains, and our friendly/attentive server took a beverage order without haste, and they were mixed perfectly. We thought this was what we needed to conclude a tough week.

Enough about us, onward to the food, which is why we went there:

- Appetizer; Atichoke dip was overly oily and salty, you can get better out of the case at any grocery store.

- Entree #1; Tuna filet sandwich was not a filet, but instead diced up and soaked in so much oily substance it made the ciabatta a soggy dough swamp. Almost intolerable. I ate a few bites strictly out of hunger necessity at the time. Not even our K9 could have the leftovers due to the slathering of sauce mixed in with our diced up tuna "filet".

- Entree #2; Alaskan Cod fish & chips weren't bad if you were at a fast food drive through. Lame is the only description that comes to mind. Nothing special at all. With this establishment's appearance one would expect better. Portion was large enough for an NFL player though. The flavor just wasn't there, but I'm sure our retriever wasn't complaining when he got the mega leftovers.

Topping off this glorious food review, both entrees came with a swampy-slaw that was so overly saturated it defied vegetable physics by maintaining it's scoop-shape during it's almost untouched stay on the plate. No crunch or freshness to it. We both found it intollerable to shove across the tongue. Blech. The 4-legged kid won't get this one either, might make for a bad clean up in the morning, though it might look better on the ground.

So there you have it. As a young, healthy wife and husband who usually recognize the good things in life, we must note the quality servers and unique environment at Greg's Grill (that would get 5 stars). Nevertheless, we like quality cusine, so we'll be seeking grub elsewhere. The food is barely acceptable.

  • Pros: Architechture, interior design, view, balanced service

1st & last visit.

My wife and I walked into Greg's on a slow evening and were promptly seated by a friendly hostess. While perusing the menus, a busboy cleared a table next to us. He didn't even glance our way. A server checked on the booth behind us. She didn't offer a " be right with you". We looked around and saw staff members, but none saw us. After 10 minutes of being ignored, we walked out. If not for the hostess that originally sat us and asked why we were leaving, they would have never known we were there. It looks like a very nice place from outside; which is where I shall remain.

Warm and Inviting, Definitely has the Bend ambience going on.

Picture a big huge lodge - with warm colors and high beam ceilings. Large Windows outlook the Deschutes River.

Then you are greeted by friendly staff - warm smiles.

Everything about this place is warm, friendly, and tastefully done.

We enjoyed our dinner. The plates had huge portions - we just split a salad and a meal that had chicken and ribs and corn and beans and soup.

Then we ended with a brownie ice cream dessert.

It was a great relaxing place to go - didn't feel rushed, felt like we could stay for awhile and enjoy the atmosphere. Check out the sinks in the bathroom. (:

We went here for our anniversary weekend, and ending here for dinner completed our great day together.

  • Pros: Great food, great atmosphere, Everything 5 stars!
  • Cons: I can't think of any.
